Exit... Stage Left, o filme, foi capturado em Montreal, Canadá durante a turnê mundial de 1981 Exit...Stage Left, que englobava também Estados Unidos e Europa (incluindo Holanda, Alemanha e Reino Unido), atingindo um público total superior a um milhão de pessoas. A filmagem incorporou cinco câmeras de 16mm separadas, tanto de mão quanto fixas, que operavam em frente à banda por trás de uma barricada e em vários locais estratégicos no palco. Durante a apresentação no Montreal Forum, o áudio foi gravado a partir de um Le Mobile, com Terry Brown e Guy Charbonneau nos controles. O material foi mixado digitalmente no Le Studio em Morin Heights, Quebec, onde Moving Pictures, Permanent Waves e o mais recente álbum do Rush, Signals, também foram gravados e mixados. O resultado, o filme Exit...Stage Left (uma performance diferente daquela que encontramos no álbum ao vivo) representa uma hora de destaques do show de duas horas do Rush, visualizando materiais de Moving Pictures, Permanent Waves, Hemispheres e A Farewell to Kings.
